The Bavarian Forest Nature Park is located in south-eastern Germany, between the Danube and the mountain tops, along the Bavarian-Bohemian border. The Bavarian Forest National Park borders to the east and the Upper Bavarian Forest Nature Park to the north. Neighbours on the Czech side are the Protected Landscape Area and the Bohemian Forest National Park.

The Bavarian Forest Nature Park has existed since 1967 and is thus one of the oldest nature parks in Bavaria. Initially it only covered the district of Regen, but today it also extends over the parts of the districts of Deggendorf and Straubing-Bogen north of the Danube as well as the district of Freyung-Grafenau and covers an area of approximately 278,000 ha.
